Strange CD-ROM Messages

I've been trying to trigger off of the CD ROM disc
insertion.  I've noticed the "block.device =
/dev/scd0" message appears when I insert a CD.  It
works fine unless I reboot.  Then, I notice the
message comes across three times on boot up.  Is there
a better way to trigger off on the CD insertion.  I
would still like to see the trigger on bootup if there
is already a CD in the drive.  Thanks for any help.
